It seemed to sneak up on us. The world of the one time event is gone. I mean the idea of sitting down to watch something on TV because they will only be playing it once is gone. The other day a friend and I were playing Halo and decided not to stop for some major news event both of us wanted to watch. We both came to the simple conclusion it will be online in about an hour or less. The idea of a video or image not online seems improbable to a growing segment of our society. Middle schoolers now are perplexed when they can’t find something online. Everything is online or so it seems. Websites like Hulu have made this sort of thinking true. Hulu is an amalgamation of many different TV channels and shows. You can watch almost anything you like in good quality and with fewer commercials than TV. It is easy to use and can be made to be full screen. The amount of good shows is staggering. Hulu is good on its own but with YouTube that has gone both widescreen and high quality plus they have just finished a contract with the some of the movie companies to show films through their service the world of recorded video is enormous. Much of the time I turn to the computer for video or shows before I go to the television. I recommend giving both of these services a try and see what conclusions you come to. Is this the true new world of video and information on demand?

Has the computer age cut you off from the human race? Does it seem like everything you use from your computer to your calendar has a lifeless digital feel? Well then it is time to bring humanity back to basic things. Let us start with a calendar shall we? The Human Calendar is a bit of a frivolous page that is also kind of awesome. Essentially a ton of pictures were taken of people holding placement cards so they could emulate a standard calendar. It is simple and rather fun to look at. Again this won’t speed you through your day but at least it will make it more interesting. Give it a try.

Things are forgotten and misremembered. Some people keep diaries to help them remember the succession of events. The problem that I have eternally is I remember the big items but all the small stories of my life get thrown into a big junk drawer of my history. I saw a site that attempts to start getting all this a bit straight. DandeLife is devoted to pulling all the online strings of your life together. If you are blogging, videoing, and part of social networks it tries to put all those into some sort of order. However this is not why I am excited by this site. I have no real interest in being that organized but memory is a tricky thing. One event leads to another and I cannot seem to untangle the Gordian Knot of what came first. It would be so much easier if I had a timeline. Seems so simple, just a matter of ,lets say once a month, putting down some of the months important events on this easy to use timeline. You can add a one line description or on another page fill it with a real description. Just think of a page that contains a small list of the important stuff, or at least the important at that moment stuff. At anytime you could go back and review events that led to some major crisis or superior epiphany. Now this is all cool and neat-o but why would you want to do this? Well New Years Eve got me thinking of well meaning and well forgotten resolutions. For some people this might be the extra bit that helps them keep it all going or maybe they rediscover this in April and see what they said they would be doing in the future. There is an old school method that is similar to this that my wife reminded me of recently. The practice of writing yourself a letter to be mailed by a friend at some future date. This holiday you may want to give one of these a try because who knows what you will have to say in the future.

Instead of posting in Monday I thought I would talk about something rather pressing. This weekend is the new updated daylight savings time. Unfortunately the computer industry has been a bit slow to react. They created patches and updates but some are causing problems. At the time of this posting the Microsoft call in help centers have been crushed under the weight of calls. Instead Microsoft has created an online chat that is taking on the job. Try their page or chat for help on this problem. Now if you are on a Mac using 10.4 or 10.3 just download the update but if you have an earlier version follow the instructions here. However I don't think it is going to be a huge headache for the average person but I would definitely call ahead for people I am meeting with or it might be a nice excuse not to go.
